National Unity day and Indira Gandhi assassination day
Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, known as National Unity Day, is commemorated on October 31 each year in India to celebrate the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel played a pivotal role in the consolidation of India's 565 princely states, and National Unity Day serves as a tribute to the remarkable contributions of this eminent figure, who also held the distinction of being India's inaugural Deputy Prime Minister.
Indira Gandhi was assassinated on October 31, 1984. Two of the Prime Minister's bodyguards, Beant Singh and Satwant Singh, fired over 30 bullets at her from point blank range, purportedly to avenge the humiliation of Sikhs and the desecration of the Golden Temple during Operation Blue Star in June of that year.
